What does it take to start a business?Sometime in 1992, Mel Fisher said, “ I want to buy a motorcycle and start a business.”Anne, (Mel’s wife), simply said, “OK, I’ll support you.”Talk about famous last words!Thru the years, she has kept her word-through many good times, difficult decisions, and much unchartered territory.

Dutch Way started as a building company named Dutch Way Builders. The name gives recognition to Mel’s Amish ancestors and also to the Amish craftsmen who taught Mel the building trade. Dutch Way Builders built Agricultural Buildings such as post frame buildings, poultry houses, and some residential framing.

Then sometime in 1994, Mel and Anne were in Pennsylvania visiting some friends who had just installed some new vinyl railings at their house.“Hey, this is a good idea!We should try this at home,” they said.So by April 1995, they contacted a supplier and started advertising.Dutch Way Builders then became Dutch Way Builders and Fencing.

During this time, a young man named Dale Shank began to work for Mel and Anne.

By the summer of 1996, Mel and Anne sold the tools, and equipment from the building business.Dutch Way Builders and Fencing became Dutch Way Fencing. They bought a box truck with an on-board generator and manual router to install vinyl fences and porch railings.Their first fence job was 5000’ of chain link fence and a small amount of vinyl porch railing for Cuddy Farms.(Since 1996, Dutch Way has specialized soley in vinyl fencing, railing and decking.)

In 1997, Dutch Way bought their first computerized router to speed up shop production.

In early 2000, Dale Shank joined Dutch Way as a partner.Dutch Way then changed their name to Dutch Way LLC.

In 2003, Dutch Way opened a retail vinyl fence store in Stuarts Draft. In 2005, Dutch Way consolidated their Harrisonburg office and shop into one new facility at 27 White Picket Trail, Mt. Crawford. (This was also their 10th anniversary in the vinyl fence industry. )

Through the years, Dutch Way has grown tremendously, but their values have remained the same.Their installations are second to none. They have the best materials warranty in the industry. While most fence companies cut quality of product to bring the lowest price, Dutch Way’s motto is still, “Bringing to you the best in vinyl fences, porch railings, and decks.”Mel, Anne, and Dale are still very much involved in the daily operations at Dutch Way
