The History of Dutch Way: A Story of Determination & Passion

In 1995, Dutch Way began as Dutch Way Builders, a small, locally owned construction and fencing company. In search of a career in the building industry, a determined 19-year-old named Dale Shank picked up the phone and told the owner, “I want to work for you.”

Fencing Expertise Built on Dreams & Hard Work

What started as a teenage dream quickly turned into a lifelong journey. Within a few months of joining Dutch Way Builders, Dale found himself managing the crew. Not long after, he became part-owner. In 2012, he purchased the company and became the sole owner, eventually building Dutch Way into what it is today—a fencing, railing and decking company known for its quality craftsmanship, premium products and personalized service.

Dutch Way Through the Years

  • 1995

Mel and Anne Fisher, owners of Dutch Way Builders in Dayton, VA, expanded their services to include fencing, railing and decking.

At age 19, Dale Shank joined the crew and quickly advanced into a management role.

  • 2000

Dale became a one-third owner, and the company rebranded as Dutch Way, LLC, focusing on what it does best—fencing, railing and decking.

Dutch Way moved to Mount Crawford, VA, operating from Mel and Anne’s home garage before relocating to Pleasant Valley Road. This new facility introduced the company’s first CNC machine, replacing manual fencing and railing fabrication.

  • 2003

Dutch Way opened a second location in Stuarts Draft, VA.

  • 2005

The Mount Crawford facility was relocated to a larger fabrication warehouse and office on White Picket Trail, which remains the company’s headquarters today.

The company added aluminum fencing and railing to the product line alongside vinyl.

  • 2012 – Today

Dale became the sole owner, leading Dutch Way into a new chapter.

The team grew from 3 to 18 employees and partnered with trusted subcontractors to improve turnaround times.

Today, Dutch Way is recognized as the Shenandoah Valley’s most trusted name in decks, fencing, railing and more.

We Focus on People First—Customers & Employees Alike

At Dutch Way, we’re not just installing fencing or building decks—we’re making people’s lives better. Dale puts it simply:

“We’re helping customers solve problems. And we treat people how we’d want to be treated.”

That same attitude shapes our company culture. We’ve created a work environment that values family, quality of life and respect for one another. Our team includes fathers and sons, cousins and long-time friends. When we say we’re a family business—we mean it.

Customer Service Sets Us Apart

We take pride in the small things because they make a big difference. That’s why customers choose Dutch Way again and again:

  • Quick Estimates: Fence and railing quotes are often same day.
  • Skilled Team: Our people know what they’re doing and care about doing it right.
  • Clear Communication: Customers are never left in the dark—from the first call to the final walkthrough.
  • Attention to Detail: We go the extra mile to make sure our customers are happy.

Valuable Lessons Learned Along the Way

Running a business isn’t always easy. There have been plenty of bumps along the way, but Dale says one lesson rises to the top:

“Everyone’s human. Let the stress roll off your back, because most things can be worked through.”

That balance of empathy and professionalism is at the heart of how Dutch Way operates, both on the job site and in the office.

Dutch Way came this morning to begin the process of our vinyl fence. They have been extremely polite and easy to work with, knowledgable, patient and professional as we changed our minds a few times about what we wanted. Our fence posts are just starting to be put in, but I would already highly recommend them! Can’t wait to see the finished product.
